Pollution can cause damage to the environment and result in destruction directly or indirectly. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970 to promote ecology and raise public awareness of the problems faced by our planet.
Let’s discuss its History below.
History of Earth DayÂ
Senator Gaylord Nelson is an American politician and environmentalist who was concerned with the worsening state of the earth. He witnessed three million gallons of oil spilled on the seaboard of Santa Barbara, California. Due to the oil spill more than 10,000 seabirds, dolphins, seals, and sea lions died. So, he combined the student anti-war protests with an emerging public awareness of air and water pollution. Senator hired a young activist to be the National Coordinator and renamed the event Earth Day.
The Theme of Earth Day 2023

according to Earthday.org, the theme of Earth Day 2022 is ‘Invest in our planet.’ The theme highlights the importance of coming together and taking action to protect the environment. Climate change is a serious problem, and it is important to take notice of the situation and act accordingly. It is simply time to give back to the planet.
Here are the 5 ways To Keep The Planet Greener And Happier
It’s time to become a responsible citizen. Here are the five ways that you can follow to tackle climate change. These will also help to keep the planet greener and happier.Â
Move to a Different Lifestyle
It is an ideal way to protect our environment. We should consume less, recycle and upcycle goods, minimize waste, convert to organic, and use eco-friendly cleaning agents. The effect on the Earth might not be visible immediately. But these changes will have a great influence on our future generations.Â
Go Green
When you go green, you reduce pollution and save energy. It also reduces the amount of energy used by the planet. You make the world a better place. India is the World’s third-largest consumer of electricity. And dependency on non-reusable energy such as coal and oil is extensive. The increasing demand has created a shortage of environmental assets such as water, air, and land. According to The U.S Department of Energy, if buildings were all green, then the U.S. would use $20 billion in less energy every single year.
Plant Trees
Reforestation is great for the environment. Planting trees helps to restore damaged areas and create new habitats. You can sign up for plantation drives, plant trees, and donate them to your friends or family. Let’s each of us pledge this Earth Day 2022 to plant 100 trees every year. Nature took care of us, now it’s time to pay back.
Save Water
Water is the most important resource for living. Try to opt for rainwater harvesting, clean fruits and veggies in a water pan, and taking shorter showers. These simple measures taken now can save us from a water crisis in the near future. According to the WHO, over 2 billion people live in water-stressed countries. So it becomes our duty to SAVE WATER!
Say NO to Plastic Usage
Plastic is the most common material used today. It is everywhere, and it is hard to get rid of. Plastics are made up of chemicals and are non-recyclable. These are often found in landfills and in the ocean causing pollution, and harming wildlife, and people. Instead of plastic, we can use Jute bags, paper bags, wooden toothbrushes, etc.
Taking a few small steps at once can make a big impact. So what are you waiting for? Adapt these habits to keep the planet greener and happier.
