Baisakhi 2022 will be this year on 14 April (Thursday). According to the Hindu solar calendar, Panchang timing for Vaishakh Sankranti will begin at 08:56 AM. Other states, including Haryana, Punjab, Jammu, and Kashmir, celebrate this day with love.
History Of Baisakhi
Baisakhi is an ancient harvest festival with other religious factors attached to it. In 1699, the tenth Guru of the Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, who laid the foundation of Khalsa Panth, challenged any Sikh to come forward, to give his/her life for the community. Five people from the crowd came forward to sacrifice their lives to defend religious freedom.
But instead of killing those five people the tenth Guru of the Sikhs baptized them with Amrit. Thus formed a five-member group of saint warriors called the Khalsa. From that day onwards, spraying of Amrit became a common practice during baptism. Apart from its religious importance, Baisakhi also marks the harvesting of the rabi crop which celebrate with glory and magnificence.
Celebration of Baisakhi 2022
Baisakhi is an agricultural festival celebrated across Punjab and parts of North India. Farmers harvest crops and thank God for their production. People decorate Gurdwaras in light during Baisakhi. While the community organizes Nagar Kirtan—a procession led by 5 Khalsa and raises the Nishan Sahib flag. The Sikh community takes out processions, led by 5 Panj Pyars, wherein people chant sacred songs from Guru Granth Sahab. Sikhs hold kirtans, visit local Gurdwaras, and gather to socialize and share festive foods.
Furthermore, people organize fairs in villages and towns where people enjoy cultural events such as Bhangra and Gidda performances, folk music, and dance. The famous Kada Prasad and langar of Gurudwara and served during the Baisakhi festival.
Baisakhi 2022 Celebrations In the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom has a large Sikh community, and the largest concentrations of Sikhs in the UK are in the West Midlands and London. A week or two before Baisakhi, the Southall Nagar Kirtan is on Sunday.
London’s annual Baisakhi celebrations rank among the biggest in the UK. Thousands of people gathered at Trafalgar Square to celebrate the occasion in 2014. People come dressed up in traditional costumes. There are lots of cultural and musical activities going on during the day. The celebrations are open to everyone. Food is strictly vegetarian. However, there are restrictions on alcohol or smoking.
