In 2015, the event accuses of racism and cultural appropriation accusations following its “China: Through the Looking Glass theme”.
Two years later, the New York City Department of Health expresses their anger. After the footage was the share of celebrities congregating to smoke in the bathroom, violating the city’s smoking laws. And last year, the event describes as “blasphemous” by the Catholic Church following its “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” theme.
In the lead up to this year’s Met Gala, here’s everything you need to know about the event, from where it is and its theme to who is hosting and more.
What is the Met Gala?
The Met Gala is an annual symphony of art, fashion, film, and music. Where the most renown members of artistic industries come together for the museum’s latest exhibition launch.
Found by publicist Eleanor Lambert, the gala – then dubb “The Party of the Year” – was first held in 1948. To encourage donations from New York’s high society for the Costume Institute. Fast forward to today, and the nights are best known for its theme, be it present via fashion or interior design. Over the years, the themes range from “Goddess: The Classical Mode” to “Manus x Machina”.
The 2019 Met Gala marks the event’s 71st anniversary. Met Gala 2019 celebrities at Red Carpet with Best-Dressed fashion looks.
The Gala was recreating in the 2018 hit film, Ocean’s 8. Where the likes of Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, and Awkwafina pull off a dramatic jewellery heist at the museum’s Egyptian edifice, the Temple of Dendur.
When is the Met Gala?
This year, the annual gala party is scheduled to take place on 6 May.
As per tradition, the night begins with a cocktail hour involving the likes of Rihanna, Kate Moss, and Kendall Jenner, who will walk the red carpet. And up to the famous stairs of the museum in front of the paparazzi. Attendees invite to admire the exhibition during an exclusive first-look before it is open to the general public. Afterwards, guests treated to cocktails and a sit-down dinner before hitting the dancefloor.
When does it start?
The red carpet arrivals begin just before 7 pm, with the biggest names in Hollywood and from the fashion elite arriving closer to 8 pm.
What is this year’s theme?
The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announces its new inspiration for the Costume Institute for 2019: ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’.
The theme inspires Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay ‘Notes on ‘Camp’. Which is widely credited to introduce the notion of ‘Camp’ to the mainstream. ‘The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration,’ Sontag once explain in Partisan Review.
Who will host the gala?
New York socialite Pat Buckley became chairwoman of the event in 1979, before Vogue US editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, took over in 1995. So Wintour is a task with choosing key figures in popular culture to serve as her co-chairs.
Rihanna 2015 at met gala
This year, Wintours’ co-chairs include Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Alessandro Michelle. But it is a rumour that Gaga or Styles will perform on the night. Previous hosts have includes Katy Perry, Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Beyonce.
Who will design the exhibition?
The exhibition will design by Belgian scenographer and lighting. Designer Jan Versweyveld, who is best known for creating David Bowie‘s “Lazarus”. And underwrote by Gucci following Michele’s focus celebration of the power of camp since he took the helm of the Italian brand in 2015.
It will be split into two parts. One will look at the origins of camp. Which Bolton will explore through Victorian slang, the Stonewall riots, and the use of the word “as a language in the queer community”, he explains.
The other will focus on contemporary designers’ interpretations of the word “camp”. Looking into the creative inspirations from Balenciaga and Miuccia Prada.
So approximately 175 pieces of art including paintings, illustrations, sculpture, and both men’s and women’s clothes will be on display.

So including “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” and “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” have been present. 1. Katy Perry turned up ready for a power cut
Staff at the John Lewis lighting department are in for a hell of a Christmas bonus after Katy Perry‘s visit over the weekend.
The singer turned up wearing not just one but two chandeliers, one on her head and one around her waist. The outfit was made in collaboration with Moschino’s Jeremy Scott, who has dressed Perry for the Met Gala several times before.
So Speaking to Vogue, he said: “The look is extremely complicated, perhaps my most complicated creation to date.
“There is a built-in corset consisting of 18 steel bones and two hidden battery packs to illuminate the lights. I mean, who wants to wear a chandelier that doesn’t light up?”
Can’t argue with that. What most people were wondering was how on earth Perry would manage to sit down for dinner. But she had that covered too, with a costume change that saw her morph into a giant burger.
2. Gigi Hadid Got Icy
The model commits to the theme of “Camp: Notes on Fashion” in the most epic way possible thanks to her icy bodysuit dripping in feathers designed by Michael Kors. They added a crystal headpiece and coat to complete her look. Her glam was equally as dazzling thanks to the crystals around her eyelashes.
3. Celine Dion reminded people of spaghetti
Apart from anything else, it’s worth noting how lucky it was that Celine didn’t turn up carrying a tent.
“At first I was a little confused when I heard camp. I wasn’t sure what it meant,” she explains to E! on the pink carpet. “I thought it meant camping like we’re going camping, and everyone’s going to stay and sleep all night together.”
But once she had established she didn’t need to bring a sleeping bag, Celine enlists fashion house Oscar de la Renta for a dress that took 3,000 hours to create. The result was a champagne-colour bodysuit, embellish with silvery sequins and a hat made of gold-tint sing peacock feathers.
The part that caught the most attention, however, was her sleeves, drop in thousands of strands of floor-length fringe, made from micro-cut glass bugle beads. Unfortunately, it didn’t have quite the desire effect with everyone, as many fans compared it to a pasta drying rack. Met Gala 2019: Celebrities at Red Carpet with Best-Dressed fashion looks.
4. Walking was too much effort for some guests
Billy Porter stars in a show called Pose, so it was only right that he should style himself as the high priest of camp. Here he is being carried in by six strapping young chaps, having luckily just miss catching his 24-carat gold headpiece on the emergency exit sign.
“Camp is often used as a pejorative,” Porter said ahead of the Gala.”What I love about having it at the Met Gala, and contextualising camp, So is it brings honour to a word and genre that can be discount very often or thought of as cheesy.”
Porter’s Sun God ensemble – a nod to ancient Egypt – include a bejewelled catsuit with 10ft wings, which he later had the opportunity to flap on the pink carpet.
5. Cardi B needed some help
Isn’t it annoying when you get all dress up for a party and then you realise you need five people to help you carry your outfit?
That’s what happens to Cardi B as she enlists an entire entourage to help her up the stairs – five alone to carry the train. Cardi wore a floor-length oxblood custom Thom Browne gown, made from tulle and silk organza and filled with down, which features a mammoth train flowing in concentric circles.
“I design this dress for Cardi specifically because she has the ultimate beauty in a woman’s body, and that is what the dress is about for me: taking advantage of that beauty,” Browne told Vogue.
It took 35 people more than 2,000 hours to make (you know she likes it like that).
6. Jordan Roth had better not turn sideways
Jordan Roth turns up to the Met Gala looking trim and slender, wearing a dramatic dark red cape.
But that didn’t last long. Once he spread his wings, his cape unfurled to reveal the inside of a theatre. But not only was it camp, but it was also a clever nod to Roth’s day job as a Broadway producer. And Roth is the president of Jujamcyn Theaters, which has been home to award-winning shows including The Book of Mormon, Springsteen On Broadway and the campest show of them all, Kinky Boots.
So Writing on Twitter, Roth describes the outfit as “a wearable sculpture that expresses so much of what I feel about theatre, about fashion and about myself”. So all very well and good as long as anyone within a half-mile radius on the pink carpet didn’t mind ducking to swerve a head injury.
7. Cara Delevingne is getting her five a day
Model Cara Delevingne’s rainbow theme was a nod to the LGBT flag, and the Pride-inspire stripes were complete with similarly multi-coloured platform heels and a Swarovski crystal cane.
The ensemble features in Dior’s haute couture spring/summer 2019 collection. Because perhaps the most eye-catching part of her outfit, however, was her hat. The headpiece, made by Machine Dazzle, featured fried eggs, eyeballs, false teeth and bunches of bananas.
But what was the inspiration behind her outfit?
“Pain,” Cara jokingly replied on the pink carpet. “No, it’s camp all the way. I would define camp as an expression of your most outrageous.” Met Gala 2019: Celebrities at Red Carpet with Best-Dressed fashion looks.
8. Kanye missed the dress code memo
As usual, Kanye West look absolutely elate to be posing for photographs. And Wife Kim Kardashian dresses to impress, with a skin-coloured Maison Mugler design that guarantees she was the centre of attention.
Her “wet look” came complete with beads giving the impression of raindrops washing over her nude body.
Kanye, meanwhile, opt for a simple black jacket that costs less than £40. So at least there’s been one outfit in this article we might just be able to afford.
