The new PlayerUnknown’s Battelgrounds Map will feature underground passageways.

A blog post on the game’s Steam page explains the new map, currently known as Codename: Savage, will continue to be developed while available for play, and part of this will include adding an underground cave system which can be parachuted into via a large entry point on the map.

Alongside the inevitable ongoing refinements and balance changes, the map will receive new vehicles and weapons; however, Bluehole says that it’s most excited about implementing “the new areas that we think will set this map apart from our first two”.

One of these areas was evidently inspired by the PUBG team’s recent research trip to Southeast Asia. Sharing a picture of an enormous natural hole in the ground, snapped during the expedition, Bluehole asked, “How’d you like to drop from the plane and try to hit a hole like this?”. Elaborating further, it explained that it’s “working on an underground cave system with plenty methods of escape”, based on Thailand’s famous Phraya Nakhon Cave and it’s buried deep inside the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park..

For those curious to know how this might eventually look in-game, Bluehole also unveiled some preliminary concept work, saying that it’s been exploring ways to ensure that the new cavern system is “a fun and unique part of our next map”. Early renders reveal that the general idea is for players to skydive down into the massive hole at the start of a match, and then carefully filter through the connected tunnel systems, bursting out of caves at various points on the map.

Bluehole says that the early work done on the cave system is “looking pretty amazing”, although it still has some way to go before the new location will be ready to show off. It doesn’t sound like there’ll be too long to wait however; the developer claims that it will begin “rolling it out in the next couple of testing phases”.

The studio had nothing to say about the weapons coming to PUBG, though it did say one of the new vehicles is a Tuk Tuk, which is a motorized rickshaw. More details on the new weapons and vehicles will be announced “soon.”

Codename: Savage is a different gameplay experience than PUBG’s two other maps, thanks mostly to its smaller size. The map is 4 km x 4 km, and the result is a more close-quarters, faster combat experience, especially in the temple and resort areas. Watch the video above to get more  impressions of the map, which feels a bit more like Fortnite than other PUBG experiences.

In other PUBG news, Xbox One players will soon get the chance to try the game for free. Anyone with an Xbox Live Gold membership will be able to play the full game for free April 19-22. A new cosmetic DLC pack has been announced for the game on Xbox One, too, and Microsoft has said PUBG’s second map, Miramar, will be coming to the console version of the game in May. For PC players, patch 10 is now available, bringing a number of changes to blue zones and the Miramar map.
