- The Nokia 5.1 Plus is in the works, according to a new leak by OnLeaks and Tiger Mobiles.
- Renders show a device with a notched display and dual-camera setup, much like the Nokia X6.
- Other specifications aren’t known, but we would expect it to slot in between the Nokia X6 and Nokia 5.1.
HMD Global unveiled the Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 smartphones on May 29. Prior to this, the company announced a slew of smartphones at the MWC 2018. But it looks like the company isn’t done with the launches for this year. Last week, we came across a leaked FCC listing hinting at two announced Nokia smartphones – Nokia X5 and X7 in the making.
Now, there are fresh reports regarding another Nokia smartphone. According to TigerMobiles via NokiaPowerUser, the company is prepping a new smartphone likely dubbed Nokia 5.1 Plus. This is said to be a mid-range Android smartphone. Those at OnLeaks have created the CAD renders of the yet to be announced Nokia smartphone. The video shows the presence of a dual-camera setup at the rear of the smartphone. Also, it is said to arrive with a notch on top of the display.
The OnLeaks Twitter account posted renders of the phone over the weekend, saying it was based on factory CAD designs. And it looks like a pretty neat design for a mid-range handset, featuring a metallic rim and what could be a glass back.
Another day, another leak… Here comes your very first look at the #NOKIA 5.1 Plus! 360° video + official looking 4K renders + dimensions (as usual, based upon factory CAD), on behalf of @tigermobiles -> https://t.co/lEJrA4mRls pic.twitter.com/vOlzMqoCYn

In saying so, the polarizing display notch is here too, which could mark the second time HMD has slapped a notch on one of its phones (after the China-only Nokia X6). The notch on the new phone is supposedly wider than the cutout seen on the X6, for what it’s worth. We also have a headphone jack atop the device, so the company might not be going full-in on 2018 trends.
Otherwise, we see two other Nokia X6-inspired features in the form of a vertically stacked dual camera setup and a rear fingerprint scanner.
Nokia 5.1 Plus features and design
Given that the Nokia X6 was well received in China, where it is exclusive for now, there is an increased possibility for the alleged Nokia 5.1 Plus smartphone to be launched globally. The mid-range smartphone alleged to be launched with a display notch and dual rear cameras is sure to be a direct rival to many other such smartphones. Besides these aspects, the smartphone seems to have negligible bezels at the sides and a thin chin. The notch on top of the display is believed to house the selfie camera, earpiece and other sensors. The dual cameras at the rear are stacked vertically along with the LED flash module . There is also a fingerprint sensor at the rear underneath the dual-camera setup.
Nokia 5.1 comes with 5.5-inch Full HD+ resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. It has been launched in two variants of 2 GB RAM/ 16 GB storage and 3 GB RAM/32 GB internal storage. It features 16 MP rear camera, 8 MP front camera and is powered by a 2,970 mAh battery. The Nokia 5.1 is priced at $219.
Specs aren’t known just yet, but it’s reasonable to expect the Nokia 5.1 Plus to slot in between the vanilla Nokia 5.1 and the Nokia X6. The standard 5.1 offers a MT6755S chipset, 2GB to 3GB of RAM, and 16GB to 32GB of expandable storage. Meanwhile, the X6 delivers a capable Snapdragon 636 chipset, 4GB/6GB of RAM, 32GB/64GB of expandable storage and a 16MP/5MP dual camera pairing.
News of a supposed Nokia 5.1 Plus comes almost a month after HMD launched the China-only X6. However, the company later ran a Twitter poll, asking users whether they want a wider release.
What to expect?
As of now, there is no confirmation regarding the unannounced Nokia smartphone. While not much regarding its specifications are unknown for now, it is speculated that the device could measure 149.5 x 71.9 x 8 mm in dimensions. Also, there are claims that it might feature a 5.7-inch display and employ a MediaTek Helio P23 processor. If the report turns out to be authentic, then the Nokia 5.1 Plus could be announced as a mid-range smartphone at the IFA 2018 tech expo in late August or early September.
In related news, Nokia recently launched the Nokia 2.1 Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 at an event held in Russia. While the Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 come with an 18:9 aspect ratio display, Nokia 2.1 is a budget smartphone with a regular 5.5-inch HD display. Both Nokia 3.1 and Nokia 5.1 are powered by Android Oreo and are a part of Google’s Android One programme. Nokia 2.1, on the other hand, is an Android Go-branded device.
