The Harry Potter universe is the one gift that keeps on giving; just like Hogwarts, it is always there to welcome you back.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, the upcoming role-playing game based on the beloved media franchise, will arrive on iOS and Android later this spring. In the lead-up to its release, developer Jam City has released our first detailed look at what to expect from the first Harry Potter game to let players live out their own Hogwarts careers.
And while the movies may have ended 7 years ago, spin-offs, new books, and now a role playing game, have kept Potterheads intrigued and interested over the years.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is the new role playing, mobile game launched by Jam City. The game allows players to experience life as a Hogwarts student i.e. receive the letters, learn spells, use Portkeys and whatnot!
The game, which is based on the series and is set in an interactive, role-playing format, just launched its first trailer.
Despite the title, Harry Potter doesn’t appear once in the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery mobile game. You will meet familiar supporting characters like Hagrid, Professors Snape, McGonagall, and Dumbledore, but otherwise, the mobile game allows you a year at Hogwarts all your own. Hogwarts Mystery allows players can to create an avatar that gets sorted into a House, attends classes, solves mysteries, and even embarks on “relationship quests” with other students.
As a concept, a Harry Potter role-playing game seems like a no-brainer. A game where you can create your own character, go to Hogwarts, learn magic and spells, and go on your own adventures seems like it would be every Harry Potter fan’s dream. (A similar idea has been around for a while in the definitely-not-Harry-Potter-licensed Wizard101 MMORPG.) Can you imagine something on the scale of, say, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but one that allowed players to roam and explore the world of Harry Potter instead?
The game takes place in the 1980s, but other than young versions of your favorite characters (spot the young, fratty Bill Weasley!), there isn’t anything else that ties it to that era. All the better, because the game envelops you completely in the magical world of Hogwarts.
Judging by the trailer, Hogwarts Mystery takes the basic premise of Pottermore and the classic EA games (Make potions! Cast spells! Get sorted!) and expands it into a full-fledged role-playing game. It’s more involved than the last trailer, showing us the full potential of the game along with some neat gameplay.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is being developed by mobile developer Jam City, a company best known for developing themed Candy Crush and Snood clones, along with a couple of free-to-play, in-app purchase-filled tie-in titles like Marvel Avengers Academy, Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, and a pair of Family Guy games. It’s not exactly an encouraging resume to start with.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery features both large plot arcs and smaller stories such as relationship quests. The game features a new encounter system in which player’s decisions in both actions and narrative impact their quests, and how other characters regard and interact with them. These choices will allow Harry Potter fans to create the legacy of the witch or wizard they want to become.

Got into the beta test for HP Hogwarts Mystery btw and it’s so awfully dull. I’ve seen fanmade games that were way better. 50% hype, 20% energy system, 20% bad OCs and 10% just trying to make some cash off the franchise

When the new Harry Potter @HogwartsMystery game comes out, expect not to hear from me for a month or two. I’ll be making friends with centaurs, playing quidditch, and learning divination…. Maybe make it 7 years…
